Abstract
This course focuses on the use of modern communication technologies in geography education at the upper secondary level (gymnázium), in close alignment with the Framework Educational Programme for Secondary General Education (RVP-G). It takes a practical approach, emphasizing the use of freely accessible online resources to teach topics from core geographical disciplines. Students are introduced to—and gain hands-on experience with—current methods for acquiring, analyzing, and visualizing geographic data. The course provides an overview of spatially referenced data sources and software tools, which are tested through practical demonstrations. It also covers the potential use of generative AI in geography education at this level.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student should be able to understand basic methods used for teaching geography using IT. He/she would be able to explain when to apply individual methods and make reasoned decisions about preconditions that are necessary for proper utilization of methods in question. All tasks and teaching materials were created so that the subject can be taught both in person and in an online environment.
Key topics
Within the framework of the exercises the students solve IT-specific tasks in presenting the current problems at global, regional and local level: The possibilities of using IT in geographic education and also solving selected problems from the field of basic geographic disciplines . Individual exercises are created with an emphasis on self-study and individual forms of teaching.
