Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic principles of mineralogy to learn basic systematic of minerals to analyses basic processes in mineralogy
Syllabus
  • 1. Crystal chemistry - the basic for the conception of the structure building of minerals (atoms, ions, bodings, coordinations) 2. Structural crystallography - periodic and non-periodic arrangement in structures, operations, elements and groups of symmetry, polymorphy, polythypy, metamict state, investigation of structures. 3. Morphological crystallography - the reflection of the structure, point groups of symmetry, crystal forms, projections, twining. 4. Physical properties of minerals (optical, mechanical properties, color, radioactivity). 5. Composition of minerals - description and analysis of minerals chemical composition, recalculation and graphic presentation. 6. Stability of minerals 7. Origin of minerals 8. Classification of minerals 9. Elements: Au group, sulphur, carbon Sulphides: chalcocite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, stibnite, pyrite, marcasite, molybdenite, arzenopyrite, tetraedrite Halides: halite, fluorite Oxides and hydroxides: cuprite, corundum, hematite, ilmenite, spinel group, rutile, cassiterite, uraninite, brucite, gibsite, goethite Carbonates, sulfates, phosphates: kalcite group, aragonite group, dolomite group, malachite, azurite, barite, anhydrite, gyps, scheelite, monazite, apatite group Silicates: olivine group, garnet group, zirkone, Al2SiO5 group, staurolite, titanite, epidote group, beryl, cordierite, tourmaline group, pyroxene group, amphibole group, wollastonite, serpentine group, kaolinite, talc, montmorillonite group, micas, chlorite group, quartz, feldspar group, leucite, nepheline, analcime, zeolite group.
