Course objectives
Different types of microbial, animal and plant cell cultures are introduced. The importance of medium composition and culture parameters will be described. Problems associated with their cultivation are discussed and examples of biotechnological applications are given.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to explain and describe the principles and methods of microbial, animal and plant cell culture, their main advantages and pitfalls in the context of individual applications in biotechnology.
Syllabus
  • Animal cell cultures (mammalian and insect): general characteristics, sessile and suspension cultures, medium composition, physical parameters, examples of protein production, hybridoma and monoclonal antibody production. Plant cell culture: cell and organ culture, medium composition, bioreactor design, examples of pharmacological metabolite and protein production. Microbial cells: culture methods, the influence of medium composition and physicochemical parameters, a combination of metabolic engineering and culture parameters, examples of metabolite production.
