Course objectives
Main objective of this course is to give students basic information about: main groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria (including cyanobacteria), archaea and fungi; structure and function of viral particle; organization and function of prokaryotic cell; differences in structure of cyanobacterial and archeal cell; eukaryotic microorganisms; microbial growth; nutritional requirements of microorganisms; energetic metabolism of chemoorganotrophs, chemolithotrophs and photosynthetic microorganisms; genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms; microbial communities; microorganisms in the environment; exploitation of microorganisms in industry; main taxonomic groups of bacteria, archea and fungi; microbial diseases and their control. At the end this course, students should be able to: - understand and explain dissimilarity between prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms - comprehend relationship among microorganisms - elucidate relation amongst microorganisms and environment - document contribution of microorganisms to environmental changes - illustrate use of microorganisms in biotechnology
