Course objectives
Selected Issues in Botany is a course offered by external lecturers who talk about their research. There are different lecturers in every semester. Rather than a comprehensive coverage of some subject, the purpose of this course is defining scientific problems in a focused topic, discussion on methods applied to solve these problems, and presentation of results of particular projects.
Syllabus
  • Arctic Ecosystems
  • 1. Introduction to the Circumpolar Arctic: definition, physiography, geology, geography, climate, etc. (mostly on the biophysical environment with a focus on vegetation, using the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation map as framework).
  • 2. Hierarchical approach to describing and mapping tundra vegetation.
  • 3. Arctic vegetation disturbance and recovery.
  • 4. Arctic vegetation in relationship to climate change (including Greening of the Arctic).
  • 5. Vegetation-permafrost relationships, bicomplexity of patterned ground.
