Course objectives
The students will obtain knowledge about topic and subjects which are not taught in regular courses at Masaryk University. The course is offered by external lecturers who talk about their research. There are different lecturers in every semester. Rather than a comprehensive coverage of some subject, the purpose of this course is defining scientific problems in a focused topic, discussion on methods applied to solve these problems, and presentation of results of particular projects. The objective is to demostrate some topics which are not included in regular courses offered at Masaryk University.
Syllabus
  • The topic for the spring semester 2019 is A primer to molecular phylogenetics presented by prof. Yves Desdevises from Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls-sur-Mer, Sorbonne Université, France. The lectures will be in English.
    Summary
    In particular, the maximum likelihood method and Bayesian inference will be described, in addition to more simple but still useful techniques such as parsimony and distance methods. Following each lecture, students will implement the methods via a practical session on computers in the afternoon. Free software working on different OSs will be used in order for students to be able to use them with their own research project. At the end of the course, students will be able to choose and use appropriate phylogenetic reconstruction methods for the data at hand.
