Prerequisites
NOW ( C8140 Bioenergetics )
This tutorial runs parallel to the lectures on bioenergetics.

Course objectives
The seminar accompanies the Bioenergetics lecture. Home work that is allocated to the students mainly includes fundamental thermodynamic calculations and examples of handling data obtained in experiments with native or reconstituted bioenergetic systems. The solutions are discussed and explained in greater detail in the classroom sessions.
Learning outcomes
The student will understand how to integrate the quantitative aspects of bioenergetics with the knowledge of traditional physical chemistry. He/she will be able to calculate energy content of nutrients and changes in Gibbs energy of chemical reactions and transport processes. He/she will become familiar with theoretical background of experimental procedures for determination of the components of proton motive force. Skills in scientific calculations, processing and interpretation of experimental data will also be increased.
Syllabus
  • Solving assigned items from the obtained sets of bioenergetic problems 1. Energy exchange between a system and its surroundings 2. Energy content of nutrients 3. Thermodynamics of chemical reactions 4. Thermodynamics and kinetics of membrane transport 5. Proton motive force and its measurement 6. Thermodynamics and kinetics of redox reactions 7. Topology of respiratory chains 8. Energy conversions in the cells
