Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Students attending this course will be acquainted with general principles of genetics and variability in living systems. The course starts with an overview of basic terminology used in the discipline. Then follow Mendel’s laws, basics of cytogenetics and Morgan’s laws, genetics of unicellular and multicellular organisms, genetics of populations. The next stage explains principles of segregation and combination of genetic material, hybridism, genetic bond, gene interaction, heredity of qualitative and quantitative attributes, determination of sex and mutations. It emphasizes specifics of man’s attributes heredity, problems of human genome study, methods used in human genetics – genealogic method, twins study methods, statistical methods in human genetics. Genetics of populations.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: historical development and origin of genetics as a scientific discipline (importance of J. G. Mendel), current development and importance of genetics. Model objects in genetics. 2. Basic genetic terminology and principles of heredity, variability, gene, allele and their mutual relations, genotype, phenotype, genome, gene pool, allelia multipla. 3. Basics of cytogenetics – I. chromosome structure and importance, chromosomal determination of sex, chromosomal abnormalities. 4. Basics of cytogenetics – II. mitosis and meiosis course. Mutations – classification, detection, causes, consequences. 5. Basics genetic laws – I. Mendel’s phenotype laws and their deviations, hybridism – monohybridism, dihybridism, polyhybridism. Backcross, reciprocal cross. 6. Basic genetic laws – II. Mendel’s genotypic laws, causes of exceptions (i.e. theoretical sex ratio failures). 7. Morgan’s laws. Genetic bond – genetic mapping, hypothesis of crossing over mechanism, genetic interactions. 8. Heredity of quantitative attributes of man. Heredity of intelligence, talent. 9. Genetics of populations – I. panmictic population and autogamous population – characteristics. Hardy-Weinberg’s law. 10. Genetics of populations – II. selection, mutation, populations structure – genetic drift, migration.
