Abstract

This study analyses the usage of artificial intelligence in the Nigerian healthcare system. The concept of smart services cuts across applications like using mobile technology to access medical professionals, using drone technology to deliver drugs that are scarce in certain locations (especially rural areas) and the practice of telemedicine. The Nigerian healthcare industry has three major challenges: a need for more power supply, high cost of accessing healthcare, chronic shortage of medical personnel, and unavailability of essential drugs. The scope of this study focuses more on how artificial intelligence has been used to diagnose and treat cancer in the absence of specialists who can attend to such cases. One discovery made by this research is that the use of artificial intelligence for diagnosis and treatment is still in its early stages but has already yielded results. Two case studies were analysed: NSIA-LUTH Cancer Center and Zenith Medical and Kidney Center (in Lagos and Abuja, respectively). Three tools were used to analyse their implementation of AI: Design Science Methodology, Interactive Research Methodology and Action Research Methodology. These tools have proven effective in carrying out research of this nature. It has been discovered that using AI, the algorithm is trained with Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), using large amounts of data, and then instructed to prepare treatment plans for cancer patients. This reduces time spent performing this task from 2 hours to five minutes, and the report prepared by the AI is more efficient than that of traditional practice. However, there are challenges to be overcome, the most complex of them being the ethical issues involved with data security and privacy since the efficiency of AI heavily depends on the use of large amounts of data. To address this concern, the study concludes by developing a model NAIBMD (Novel Approach for Artificial Intelligence Integration with Blockchain in Medical Diagnosis) to resolve the possibility of data breaches. …víceméně
