The primary goal of this Master’s thesis is to provide a literary translation of one of the chapters from the Chinese memoir Dongdang de qingchun: Hongse da yuan de nü’ermen[Youth in Chaos: Two Daughters of China's Revolution] written by Ye Weili and Ma Xiaodong within the framework of text and translation analysis. The purpose of this translation is to preserve the authors’ intention of changing the negative portrayal of the Cultural Revolution. A portion of this thesis focuses on the comparison with a memoir originally published in the diaspora. In the analytical part, we pay special attention to the characteristics unique to Chinese culture and to the differences between a memoir written in Chinese and subjected to censorship and a memoir written in English outside mainland China.
