This Bachelor's thesis will examine how Czech administrative law judges understand and use empathy in their work. Empathy can be understood as the capacity to take another person's perspective and to resonate with their emotional state. Judges are expected to be impartial, yet they work closely with litigants in difficult life situations, which creates a tension between emotional responsiveness and professional distance. The thesis will explore how judges make sense of this tension and what role empathy plays in their work and decision-making. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with Czech administrative law judges and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The aim is to answer the question of what empathy means to administrative law judges and how it is shaped by the norms and expectations of the judicial profession.
