Course objectives

At the end of course, student will be able to explain the relationship between human and environment, its physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial factors and their interactions. Student will be able to explain the role of adaptation and its active support for the positive development and promotion of both individual and public health;

Student will be able to make deduction about possibilities for preventive provisions in the field of clean and safe environmental, occupational and home surrounding, the quality of air, water, food. Student will be able to understand and explain the different types of prevention, their tasks and aims and methods of realization.

The student will be able to interpret the positive and negative influences of lifestyle factors on human/public health, including the autoagressive behaviours (nutrition, physical activity, psychical overload and stress, smoking, abuse of alcohol and illegal drugs); Based on acquired knowledge, the student will be able to make deductions about the importance of environment and lifestyle in the health protection and promotion, and about the primary prevention priorities;

Based on acquired knowledge, the student will be able to formulate decisions about concrete preventable possibilities for some more important non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular, oncological, metabolically, immune, respiratory.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able
to explain relationship between human and physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial environmental factors;
to deduce the importance of the environment and lifestyle in the protection and promotion of health and priority in the area of primary prevention;
to interpret positive and negative lifestyle factors;
to formulate the decisions on specific possibilities of prevention of selected non-communicable diseases of mass occurrence
Syllabus

  • 1. MAN AND ENVIRONMENT: Physical, biological, chemical and social factors in macro- and microenvironment. Their interactions. Ways of adaptation and compensation for keeping the homeostasis. "health" and "disease", their determinants.
  • 2. PREVENTION: primary and secondary prevention, tasks and aims. The most important world and Czech primary prevention programmes.
  • 3. NOISE: sources, impact on health, possibilities for control.
  • 4. LIGHT AND ILLUMINATION: physiology of seeing, optimal working conditions. The physiologic sense of colours.
  • 5. RADIATION: different types, their sources and impact on human health. Possibilities of control.
  • 6. COMPLEX OF MICROCLIMATE: external and internal conditions. Ways of thermoregulation. Work places with extreme microclimate, rules for drinking schedule. Long-term and short-term thermal load.
  • 7. BIOLOGICAL RHYTMS: circadian and other types, their influence on the performances. Shift work as a risk for health. Active and passive rest. Hygiene of sleeping.
  • 8. AIR AND HEALTH: the most common contaminants of ambient air, their sources and human exposure. Smog. Health consequences of the exposure to polluted air.
  • 9. BASIC TOXICOLOGY: ways of exposure, intake, uptake; metabolism of xenobiotics, genetic polymorphism in the microsomal enzymes; excretion. Health insure caused by chemical exposure, carcinogenesis. Similarities and differences between children and adults in toxicology.
  • 10. HOUSING AND HEALTH: the most common risk factors at homes, health consequences of exposure (housing-related diseases, sick building syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity). Ventilation, types and sense.
  • 11. WATER AND HEALTH: the hygienic limits for drinking water, indicators of sewage contaminants. Trace elements in drinking water. Diseases related to water pollution. The principles for safety source of water.
  • 12. NUTRITION AND HEALTH: diseases related to malnutrition and food contaminants. The role of nutrition in health promotion. Dietary guidelines. The ways for measurement of nutritional habits.
  • 13. WASTE AND HEALTH: the types of waste products, their sources. Hygienic rules for safe destruction of waste products.
  • 14. NATURAL AND MAN-MADE CHEMICALS IN ENVIRONMENT: their types, point and areal sources. Environment in the Czech Republic. Principles of the monitoring of environmental pollutants. "Natural pesticides".
  • 15. SMOKING AND HEALTH: Smoking as the most important single preventable risk factor of premature morbidity and mortality. Dependence on smoking as a psychiatric disease. Involuntary smoking and health consequences of exposure.
  • 16. WORKING AND HEALTH: risk occupational factors and related diseases. The rules for safety of occupational environment and health protection of workers.
  • 17. STRESS AND HEALTH: physiologic response on stress situations. Stress- related diseases. Rules for the prevention of stress.
  • 18. NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES: epidemiology, aetiology, prevention; Cardiovascular diseases, Cancer, Respiratory diseases, Allergy, Diabetes mellitus, Osteoporosis.

Teaching methods

Lectures.

Reading and studying ALL REQUIRED LITERATURE.

For those who will have to write research projects and seminar papers during third, fourth and fifth year, it is strongly recommended to enrol the following courses:

 VSIL021 - Information literacy - (3 credits) - e-learning.
 VSKP041 - A course of working with information sources and tools (4 credits).
Assessment methods

COLLOQUIUM INFORMATION:

1.   To sit for colloquium, it will be required to successfully complete the prerequisite subjects and to have obtained the subjectʼs credit - VLPL9X1a.

2.   Each student must register in the Information System (IS) in one of the offered colloquium / examination terms. The colloquium has fixed colloquium / examination terms / dates - (Only during the examination period, except the examination pre-term). No extra-terms will be given.

3.   Students registered to a colloquium term will fail the term if:
  a-) arrive late the colloquium day.
  b-) they are not present and previously did not cancel the term in the stipulated periods (see IS).

4.   In case of failure, EACH STUDENT CAN RETAKE THE COLLOQUIUM TWO MORE TIMES, only in given terms (according to Masaryk University study rules).

5.   In case of failure during the third term (second resit), the student must repeat the course in the following school year.

6.   All colloquium questions are based on ALL REQUIRED LITERATURE, seminars and lectures.


Colloquium → Written examination → 20 multiple choice question test, with only one correct answer - (to pass the test, it is required a minimum of 14 correct answers / points).

SCORE:

  Passed → 14 and more correct answers / points.
  Failed → 13,99 or less correct answers / points.


In order to omit / avoid guessing while answering the MCQ test / examination, the following system will be used:
  Correct answer = 1 point.
  No answer = 0 point.
  Wrong answer = -0,5 point.

  Test scoring will be according to the next formula:
  Final score = Number of correct answers - (Number of wrong answers / two).

  For example:
  15 correct answers (15 x 1 point = 15 points) - Passed.
  5 wrong answers (5 x -0,5 = -25 points).
  15 - 2,5 = 12,5. The final score of the test will be 12,5 answers / points.
  Final result = Failed.


  ** For that reason, only answer the question when you are sure of the answer.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT, PLAGIARISM DETECTION AND ETHICAL ISSUES:


1.   Any attempts of ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT, such as cheating or assisting someone else to cheat during the colloquium, will result in disciplinary actions, such as:
  a-) You will be required to hand over your examination paper and asked to leave the examination room. This means, you failed the examination (examination term), with the respective score F / 4, on your academic records in the information system.
  b-) Opening disciplinary proceedings.
  c-) Failing the subject / course.
  d-) Expulsion from university.

2.   During the colloquium, it is forbidden to use items such as:
  a-) Smart phones / Tablets.
  b-) Laptops.
  c-) To wear earphones or headphones (if not medical prescribed).
  d-) To talk.

*In such cases, disciplinary actions will be taken (See above numeral 1).
