- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to practice the basic relationships of general and physical chemistry as well as the structures and properties of an-/organic compounds important in the follow-up subject of Biochemistry.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry in the scope necessary for further study of biochemistry.
- apply general physical and chemical laws to processes in living organisms.
- describe the properties of the major biogenic elements and compounds important in medicine, nutrition, and toxicology.
- understand the chemical properties of organic and bioorganic compounds important for the understanding of biochemical processes. - Syllabus
- Properties of particles, molar quantities, composition of solutions, basic calculations.
- Electrolyte dissociation, ion activity, ionic strength, osmotic pressure, osmolality and osmolarity.
- Protolytic reactions and equilibria, pH calculations of solutions, buffers.
- Non-covalent interactions, adsorbents, surfactants. Poorly soluble salts, the product of solubility.
- Reaction kinetics, the law of chemical equilibrium.
- Gibbs energy. Redox reactions and equilibria.
- Properties and transformations of characteristic groups in compounds.
- Properties and transformations of carboxylic acids and their derivatives.
- Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds, relation to vitamins and cofactors.
- Structure and properties of carbohydrates.
- Structure and properties of amino acids and proteins.
- Structure and properties of lipids and steroids.
