Course objectives
After finishing the course, students will be able to understand the terms used in general and systemic physiology of man. Students will acquire knowledge necessary for analysis and subsequent interpretation of phenomena taking place on cell, tissue and organ levels as well as on the level of whole human organism.
Syllabus
  • Program of tutorials:
  • Respiratory system Ventilation of the lungs (mechanics of respiration, dead space, volumes, pressures, apnoea, hyperpnoea, hypopnoea) Gas transport (O2, CO2, ischaemia) Tissue respiration (respiratory quotient, hypoxia) Regulation of ventilation and pulmonary circulation Assessment of respiratory functions (spirometry, blood gases)
  • Excretory system Body fluids, volumes and ionic composition of body fluids. Renal countercurrent system, ADH. Clearance. pH regulation.
  • Endocrine physiology General principles of endocrine physiology (hierarchy of endocrine functions - examples, second messengers, hormone-receptor complex, up- and down-regulation of receptors). Humoral regulation of mineral and water metabolism (vasopressin, aldosteron, ANF, parathormone, vitamin D, calcitonin). Regulation of glycemia (insulin, glucagon, cortison, STH, adrenaline). Diabetes mellitus. Humoral regulation of energy production (thyroid gland, thyreopathies).
  • Central system of behavioural defense (central system of emotions and stress) Basic structures, their location in brain, functional organization of the system. Inputs into the system, stress stimuli and situations. Components of defensive response in dependence on result and duration of defensive reaction: Behavioural component of defensive reaction, determinants of its formation. Vegetative component of defensive reaction, its structural basis, organ manifestations. Endocrine component of defensive reaction, its structural basis, metabolic and other impacts. Experiential component of defensive reaction, its origin and significance. Sustained response to stress and immune functions.

Teaching methods
Tuition is done in the form of seminar. Students should read the literature of particular area of physiology, and they prepare their own presentation of the topic. During the seminars, students present the topics and intensify their knowledge in discussion with the teacher.
Assessment methods
The course-unit credit is conditioned by full attendance and 70% control of preparedness in the seminars (control test on the begining of seminar -7 and more points).
