Course objectives
Seminars are complementary to Biochemistry lecture (ZLBC0422p). The knowledge of intermediary metabolism, characteristic features of metabolism of individual organs and tissues and metabolism at various conditions of organism (well fed state, fasting, starvation, metabolic stress, obesity, metabolic syndrome)are thoroughly practiced during Biochemistry seminars.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to explain the interrelationship between the metabolism of nutrients under different states of the organism. Describes the metabolic characteristics of major organs and tissues and major disorders, discusses their association with diseases. Understands and discusses principles of maintaining homeostasis and acid-base balance in the organism, including modeling situations It discusses the composition of body fluids and their disorders in connection with the principles of homeostasis. It explains the principles of metabolism regulation at all levels.
  • Laboratory biochemical examinations. Blood collection and processing. Biochemical analyzers and principles of spectrophotometry.
  • Factors influencing the result and interpretation of the examination. Enzymes in clinical diagnostics Lipoproteins and their metabolism. Cholesterol transport, balance of daily conversion Blood glucose (sources, consumption, regulation). Diabetes mellitus. Protein and amino acid transformations. Proteins in nutrition. Amino acid conversions and ammonia transport forms.
  • Relationships between the conversion of basic nutrients in different states. Metabolism under stress. Metabolic syndrome Liver function. The role of the liver in the metabolism of essential nutrients, hormones and vitamins. Heme catabolism, urobilinoids, types of hyperbilirubinemia.
