- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to gain basic knowledge about the prevention of oncological diseases, the manifestations, symptoms, diagnosis and therapeutic procedures in oncology, with the implementation of nursing process in individuals with cancer disease. We also emphasize the basics of effective and supportive communication with cancer patient.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completition of this course student should be able to: - know basic symptoms of oncological diseases - know basic diagnostic methods and principles of staging of oncological diseases - know basic principles of local and systemic treatment of cancer - konw basic nursing issues and their management - communicate effectively with cancer patient
- Syllabus
- Nursing in oncology - lectures to students studying bachelor 1. Epidemiology, etiology, basics of tumor biology, diagnostics and staging, principles of anticancer therapy, overview of systemic anticancer therapy, side effects of chemotherapy and their management 2. Surgical onkology - basic principles, types of operations, surgical care (wound healing, stoma and drains) 3. Radiotherapy - basic principles, basic modalities and forms of radiotherapy, side effects and their management 4. Treatment of most common solid tumors I.(breast, lung, head and neck, gynecological and brain cancer) - clinical manifestations and basic principles of anticancer therapy 5. Treatment of most common solid tumors II.(urological and gastroinstestinal cancers, tumor metastases) - clinical manifestations and basic principles of anticancer therapy 6. Haematooncology (lymphomas, leukaemia, multiple) - clinical manifestations and basic principles of anticancer therapy, bone marrow transplantation and its complications 7. Basics of effective and supportive communication with cancer patient and his family 8. Nursing in oncology - selected topics - central venous catethers and i.v. ports, chronical wounds, extravasation of cytostatics - basic treatment options 9. Palliative care in onkology
