- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to teach students the dramaturgical principles of approaching the scripts (texts) of a theatre production from the perspective of translation theory. On the basis of case studies and on the theoretical principles of theatre making the importance of the choices of translation and/or adaptation of a particular play will be demonstrated as well as the choice's consequences for the resulting production, including minute details.
- Learning outcomes
- On successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
* explain the notion of dramaturgy;
* articulate and analyze the relationship between the directorial-dramaturgical concept and the choices of translation/adaptation used for the production;
* compare concrete translations/adaptations and describe their dramaturgy;
* explicate the complexity of drama translation and adaptation in theoretical terms. - Syllabus

- 2. Translation theory: the translation-adaptation spectrum
- 3. Case study 1: Menaechmové (transaltions Stiebitz, Pivec)
- 4. Case study 2: The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night (adoption and appropiration)
- 5. Case study 3: Romeo and Julie (transaltions and adaptations)
- 6. Case study 4: Hedda Gabler (translations Rak, Fröhlich and adaptation Saavedra)
