Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course);
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
apply grammatic rules to translating of concrete sentences and easy texts from Latin and translating simple sentences into Latin;
analyze sentences and utilize the analysis in translating;
compare similarities and differences between various morphological forms;
convert clauses from active to passive voice and vice versa and do similar operations (use synonymic grammatical devices etc.)
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronuntiation and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with Czech. Introduction to declension and conjugation.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, present infinitive, imperfect conjunctive); 1st declension; verb esse.
  • 2nd declension, basic prepositions.
  • 2nd conjugation, compounds of the verb esse, imperfect conjunctive expressing a wish; possessive pronouns.
  • 3rd declension nouns; double accusative construction; pronouns is, ea, id and idem, eadem, idem.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation; pronouns hic, haec, hoc.
  • Adjectives of the 3rd declension; present active participle; personal pronouns.
  • Pasive voice (1st-4th conjugation), deponent verbs; pronouns ipse, ille, iste; numerals.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice, homework, reading of simple Latin texts, translation.
Assessment methods
The credit is awarded for active participation in the classes and passing the control tests. Five or six such tests are written during the course. Tests need to be passed at 75% for obtaining the credit. The student may miss one of the tests (medical excuse is needed).
