Course objectives
Seminar is divided in to four groups, which differ thematically:
- Seminar on modern Chinese literature (Mgr. Táňa Dluhošová)
- Seminar on history of China, which will be held in English (Oliver Weingarten, Ph.D.)
- Seminar on Chinese thought (Mgr. Et. Mgr. Dušan Vávra, Ph.D.)
- Seminar on the methodology and practice of field research

C. Seminar on Modern Chinese Literature:
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- apply knowledge from compulsory overview courses to analyse particular study question
- understand and explain the core terms and concepts of respective theoretical approaches
- individually interpret study questions and problems
- write an academic paper

D. Seminar on History:
After completing this course, students will
1. have acquired an understanding of some key issues in current debates on history and historiography;
2. be familiar with a variety of thematic and methodological approaches to the study of history;
3. have a general knowledge of Chinese historiographical genres; 4. be able to independently study, assess and reflect on both historical sources and works of scholarship;
5. be in a position to design, plan and compose essays that meet common standards of academic writing.

Teaching methods
C. Seminar on modern Chinese literature:
- Seminar takes place once in two weeks
- The emphasis is put on students' home preparation (reading of primary and secondary sources, preparation of presentation).
- The classes will be conducted as moderated discussions: each student will have an oral presentation on respective theoretical approach, which will be (by the teacher) applied to a literary writing.
- students will use this theoretical approach to analyse other literary writings and write the academic paper.
Assessment methods
C. Seminar on modern Chinese literature:
- oral presentation and submission of its synopsis
- academic paper (20 norm-pages)

D. Seminar on History:
Students are expected to attend all meetings, prepare the required readings and participate in discussions. Further, they will be asked to give one presentation of approximately 15 minutes in class based on a selected article or passage from a book. After the end of term, students will prepare an essay of c. 20pp. on a topic they have decided on after consultation with the lecturer.
