Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain crystal features and structure; work with information on the main rock-forming and deposit-forming minerals.
Learning outcomes
Student will after passing the subject:
- understand the basics of morphological and structural crystallography;
- be able to identify crystall system and crystal shapes of the holoedric point groups of symmetry
- have theoretical knowledge of about 50 major minerals, their chemical formulas, properties, genetics and application in practice
- be able, according to morphology, physical properties and theoretical knowledge to practically determine the main rock-forming and deposit-forming minerals
Syllabus
  • 1. Crystal chemistry - the basic for the conception of the structure building of minerals (atoms, ions, bondings, coordinations) 2. Structural crystallography - periodic and non-periodic arrangement in structures, operations, elements and groups of symmetry, polymorphy, polythypy, metamict state, investigation of structures. 3. Morphological crystallography - the reflection of the structure, point groups of symmetry, crystal forms, projections, twinning. 4. Physical properties of minerals (optical, mechanical properties, color, radioactivity). 5. Composition of minerals - description and analysis of minerals chemical composition, recalculation and graphic presentation. 6. Stability of minerals 7. Origin of minerals 8. Classification of minerals 9.
