Course objectives
This course should render basic information on the genetic structure of natural populations as well as on underlying evolutionary mechanisms and processes. It is designed both as an extension of Evolutionary Biology and as a prerequisity for the follow-up Molecular Ecology.
Learning outcomes
The graduate will be able to understand basic principles of evolutionary mechanisms acting on the population level as a footing for practical uasage of up-to-date molecular-genetic methods of analysis of genetic variation in natural populations.

  • 1. Genetic variation in natural populations: Hardy-Weinberg principle, linkage disequilibrium
  • 2. Sources of variation: mutation, recombination, gene flow, non-random mating
  • 3. Natural selection
  • 4. Interactions of selection and other evolutionary forces, balancing selection
  • 5. Random processes in populations
  • 6. Molecular evolution
  • 7. Principles of quantitative genetics
