Basic life support and AED in adult
What will we learn in this unit?
- algorithm of basic life support in adults
- basic instructions for using the AED
Take home message:
- If the patient is not responding and breathing normally even after the head tilt and chin lift, we consider him to have a cardiac arrest. Therefore we have to start CPR immediately.
- Gasping is a frequent symptom of sudden cardiac arrest and cannot be considered as normal breathing.
- It is essential to minimise interruptions while providing chest compressions (especially during the change of the rescuers or the rescue breathing).
- If an AED is available, its use is part of basic resuscitation. However, its basis remains high-quality chest compressions with minimal interruptions.
