Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.
Learning outcomes

  • 1. Microscopic structure of the lymphatic system. Mononuclear phagocyte system.
  • 2. Microscopic structure and development of respiratory system. Respiratory passages and lungs. Blood - air barrier.
  • 3. Digestive tract (gastro-intestinal tract - GIT) I. Microscopic structure of the oral cavity - lips, cheeks, salivary glands, tongue, tooth.
  • 4. GIT II. General structure of the wall of digestive tube. Microscopic structure of the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines. Histophysiology of the intestine and blood circulation.
  • 5. GIT III. Microscopic structure of the liver, gallbladder, gall ducts, and pancreas. Overview of development of the gut.
  • 6. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system: Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Blood circulation of kidneys. Urinary passages. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).
  • 7. Microscopic structure of the male reproductive system: Testis, excretory genital ducts, accessory genital glands, penis. Spermato- and spermiogenesis. Composition of the sperm (ejaculate).
  • 8. Microscopic structure of the female reproductive system: Ovary, oviduct, uterus, vagina, external genitalia. Ovarian cycle, ovulation, atresia. Oogenesis. Menstrual cycle. Relations between the menstrual and ovarian cycle.
  • 9. Development of internal and external sexual organs. General characteristics of the indifferent stage.
  • 10. Microscopic structure, histophysiology and development of endocrine glands: Hypophysis, epiphysis, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, islets of Langerhans. Principles of humoral regulation.
  • 11. Microscopic structure and development of the central and peripheral nervous system. Structure of gray matter in the CNS: Iso- and allocortex, cerebellar cortex, spinal cord. Meninges. Ganglia and peripheral nerves. Overview of development of the brain and spinal cord including histogenesis of the neural tube.
  • 12. Microscopic structure of the organ of vision: The eye and its refractive (dioptric) media. Accessory structures of the eye. Microscopic structure of the ear (vestibulocochlear organ). Major structural differences between the statokinetic and acoustic compartments. Overview of development of the eye and vestibulocochlear organ.
  • 13. Microscopic structure and development of the skin and skin derivatives. Mammary gland.
  • 14. Development of body cavities and mesenteries. Development of the diaphragm. Development of the spleen.

Assessment methods
Final examination is composed of the practical part (slide test) and the theoretical part that includes written test and oral exam. In practical part, student should identify minimally 6 out of 8 slides. Oral exam includes 2 questions (1 histology, 1 embryology). Rules and conditions applicable for examining in Histology and Embryology can be found on the website of Department of Histology and Embryology (http://www.med.muni.cz/histology/education) as Provision of the Head of the department on the rules and conditions applicable for practical training and for examining in histology and embryology/en.
A necessary condition for admission to exam is to obtain credit from the Histology and Embryology II-practice.

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.

  • 4. GIT II. General structure of the wall of digestive tube. Microscopic structure of the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines. Histophysiology of the intestine and blood circulation.
  • 5. GIT III. Microscopic structure of the liver, gallbladder, gall ducts, and pancreas. Overview of development of the gut.
  • 6. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system: Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Blood circulation of kidneys. Urinary passages. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.

  • 1. Microscopic structure of the lymphatic system. Mononuclear phagocyte system.
  • 2. Microscopic structure and development of respiratory system. Respiratory passages and lungs. Blood - air barrier.
  • 3. Microscopic structure of skin and skin derivatives. Development of the skin. Mammary gland.
  • 4. GIT II. General structure of the wall of digestive tube. Microscopic structure of the oesophagus, stomach, and intestines. Histophysiology of the intestine and blood circulation.
  • 5. GIT III. Microscopic structure of the liver, gallbladder, gall ducts, and pancreas. Overview of development of the gut.
  • 6. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system: Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Blood circulation of kidneys. Urinary passages. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).
  • 7. Microscopic structure of the male reproductive system: Testis, excretory genital ducts, accessory genital glands, penis. Spermato- and spermiogenesis. Composition of the sperm (ejaculate).
  • 8. Microscopic structure of the female reproductive system: Ovary, oviduct, uterus, vagina, external genitalia. Ovarian cycle, ovulation, atresia. Oogenesis. Menstrual cycle. Relations between the menstrual and ovarian cycle.
  • 9. Development of internal and external sexual organs. General characteristics of the indifferent stage.
  • 10. Microscopic structure, histophysiology and development of endocrine glands: Hypophysis, epiphysis, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, islets of Langerhans. Principles of humoral regulation.
  • 11. Microscopic structure and development of the central and peripheral nervous system. Structure of gray matter in the CNS: Iso- and allocortex, cerebellar cortex, spinal cord. Meninges. Ganglia and peripheral nerves. Overview of development of the brain and spinal cord including histogenesis of the neural tube.
  • 12. Microscopic structure of the ear (vestibulocochlear organ). Major structural differences between the statokinetic and acoustic compartments. Overview of development of the vestibulocochlear organ.
  • 13. Microscopic structure of the organ of vision: The eye and its refractive (dioptric) media. Accessory structures of the eye. Overview of development of the eye.

Assessment methods
Final examination is composed of the practical part (slide test) and the theoretical part that includes written test and oral exam. In practical part, student should identify minimally 6 out of 8 slides. Oral exam includes 2 questions (1 histology, 1 embryology). Rules and conditions applicable for examining in Histology and Embryology can be found on the website of Department of Histology and Embryology (http://www.med.muni.cz/histology/education) as Provision of the Head of the department on the rules and conditions applicable for practical training and for examining in histology and embryology/en.
A necessary condition for admission to exam is to obtain credit from the Histology and Embryology II-practice.

Final examination is composed of the practical part (slide test) and the theoretical part that includes written test and oral exam. In practical part, student should identify minimally 6 out of 8 slides. Oral exam includes 2 questions (1 histology, 1 embryology). Rules and conditions applicable for examining in Histology and Embryology can be found on the website of Department of Histology and Embryology (http://www.med.muni.cz/histology/education) as Provision of the Head of the department on the rules and conditions applicable for practical training and for examining in histology and embryology/en.
A necessary condition for admission to exam is to obtain credit from the Histology and Embryology II-practice.

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.

  • Microscopic anatomy and embryology
  • 1. Introduction to development of the digestive system - the gut tube and its divisions. Layers of the alimentary canal. A survey of the microscopic structure of the stomach. Microscopic structure of the small and large intestines. Microscopic structure of the liver and pancreas. Islets of Langerhans. Overview of development of the gut and its developmental malformations.
  • 2. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system. Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).
  • 3. Microscopic structure of male genital organs: Testis and epididymis. Spermato- and spermiogenesis. Composition of the ejaculate. Microscopic structure of female genital organs: Ovary and uterus. Ovarian cycle, menstrual cycle including relations between them. Oogenesis. Development of gonads and genital ducts, general characteristics of the indifferent stage. A short overview of defects of gonads and genital ducts.
  • 4. Microscopic structure and development of endocrine glands: Hypophysis, epiphysis, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, and islets of Langerhans.
  • 5. Microscopic structure of the central nervous system (telencephalon, cerebellum, and spinal medulla). Overwiev of development of the brain and spinal cord including histogenesis of the neural tube.
  • 6. Microscopic structure of the organ of vision: The eye and its refractive (dioptric) media. Overview of development of the eye. Microscopic structure of the internal ear (vestibulocochlear organ). Overview of development of the vestibulocochlear organ.
  • 7. Development of the skin and skin derivatives. Development of the heart and vessels. Fetal blood circulation. Development of body cavities and diaphragm.

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.

  • Microscopic anatomy and embryology
  • 1. Introduction to development of the digestive system - the gut tube and its divisions. Layers of the alimentary canal. A survey of the microscopic structure of the stomach. Microscopic structure of the small and large intestines. Microscopic structure of the liver and pancreas. Islets of Langerhans. Overview of development of the gut and its developmental malformations.
  • 2. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system. Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).
  • 3. Microscopic structure of male genital organs: Testis and epididymis. Spermato- and spermiogenesis. Composition of the ejaculate. Microscopic structure of female genital organs: Ovary and uterus. Ovarian cycle, menstrual cycle including relations between them. Oogenesis. Development of gonads and genital ducts, general characteristics of the indifferent stage. A short overview of defects of gonads and genital ducts.
  • 4. Microscopic structure and development of endocrine glands: Hypophysis, epiphysis, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, and islets of Langerhans.
  • 5. Microscopic structure of the central nervous system (telencephalon, cerebellum, and spinal medulla). Overwiev of development of the brain and spinal cord including histogenesis of the neural tube.
  • 6. Microscopic structure of the organ of vision: The eye and its refractive (dioptric) media. Overview of development of the eye. Microscopic structure of the internal ear (vestibulocochlear organ). Overview of development of the vestibulocochlear organ.
  • 7. Development of the skin and skin derivatives. Development of the heart and vessels. Fetal blood circulation. Development of body cavities and diaphragm.

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of histology ana embryology that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. At the end of the course students should be able to: - in histology a) define basic terms and categories of the subject and apply used classification system in the praxis; b) describe and explain structure and function of animal cells on submicroscopic and molecular levels; c) describe and explain structural characteristics of epithels, connective and supporting tissues (incl. their function), muscle tissue including mechanism of muscle contraction and nerve tissue; d) identify basic tissues and main organs of the human body in histological slides; e) analyze the microscopic structure of organs under normal conditions and compare it with changes evoked with pathological changes or alterations; f) understand existing close interrelations between structure and function of individual tissues and organs of the human body; - in embryology: 1) explain the development of gametes, meiosis principle and regulation processes during gametogenesis; 2) discuss main developmental processes and genetic controle of development; 3) describe early development of the human embryo incl. development of extraembryonic structures; 4) categorize phases of prenatal development and characterize key developmental stages of individual organ systems; 5) explain mechamisms of origin of frequent malformations using knowledge of course of development under physiological conditions.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.

  • Microscopic anatomy and embryology
  • 1. Introduction to development of the digestive system - the gut tube and its divisions. Layers of the alimentary canal. A survey of the microscopic structure of the stomach. Microscopic structure of the small and large intestines. Microscopic structure of the liver and pancreas. Islets of Langerhans. Overview of development of the gut and its developmental malformations.
  • 2. Microscopic structure and development of the urinary system. Nephron - its structure, histotopography, and function. Stages in development of kidneys (pro-, meso-, and metanephros).
  • 3. Microscopic structure of male genital organs: Testis and epididymis. Spermato- and spermiogenesis. Composition of the ejaculate. Microscopic structure of female genital organs: Ovary and uterus. Ovarian cycle, menstrual cycle including relations between them. Oogenesis. Development of gonads and genital ducts, general characteristics of the indifferent stage. A short overview of defects of gonads and genital ducts.
  • 4. Microscopic structure and development of endocrine glands: Hypophysis, epiphysis, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal gland, and islets of Langerhans.
  • 5. Microscopic structure of the central nervous system (telencephalon, cerebellum, and spinal medulla). Overwiev of development of the brain and spinal cord including histogenesis of the neural tube.
  • 6. Microscopic structure of the organ of vision: The eye and its refractive (dioptric) media. Overview of development of the eye. Microscopic structure of the internal ear (vestibulocochlear organ). Overview of development of the vestibulocochlear organ.

Course objectives
Main objective of the subject is to combine programmed teaching of two biomedical branches that occupy a key position among subjects of the theoretical study on medical faculties. The teaching lasts one year (2 semesters) and involves lectures and practices. Within section Histology and embryology II students of dentistry obtain informations concerning the microscopic structure and development of the digestive, urinary, reproductive,and nervous systems, sensory organs, endocrine glands and skin as well as embryology of circulatory system (development of the heart and vessels including the fetal blood circulation).
Medical histology deals with microscopic structure and functional features of cells, tissues and organs under normal conditions. The aim of histological lectures is to provide dentistry students with the essential knowledge of structure and function of cells, tissues and all important organ systems of the human body. At the end of lectures, students with knowledge acquired should be able to understand good most of functional relationships and regulatory mechanisms at all structural levels and to continue in effective study of further related medical branches as are pathologic anatomy and physiology. Main objectives of embryology and embryologic lectures addressed to students of dentistry can be summarized as follows: to give an appropriate sum of facts about course, staging and crucial principles of the human prenatal ontogeny; to learn the latest findings of development of individual organs or organ systems of the human, including developmental chronology and molecular embryology; to describe and analyze causes and mechanisms of the origin of birth defects with higher incidence.
Microscopic structure of organs of the orofacial system combined with their development is studied separately within the special subject Oral histology and embryology that follows after completion of histology and embryology.

Course objectives
Microscopic structure and development of the digestive, urinary, reproductive,and nervous systems, sensory organs, endocrine glands and skin. Development of the heart.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • 1. týden: První základy vývoje trávicího systému. Obecná stavba stěny trávicí trubice. Přehled mikroskopické stavby žaludku. 2. týden: Přehled mikroskopické stavby tenkého a tlustého střeva. Stavba jater a slinivky břišní včetně Langerhansových ostrůvků. 3. týden: Přehled vývoje trávicí soustavy a nejdůležitějších vývojových vad. 4. týden: Stavba a vývoj močového systému. Nefron stavba, histotopografie a funkce. 5. týden: Stavba mužských pohlavních orgánů: Varle a nadvarle. Spermatogeneze a stavba zralé spermie. Ejakulát. 6. týden: Stavba ženských pohlavních orgánů: Ovarium a děloha. Ovulační a menstruační cyklus - vzájemné vztahy. Oogeneze. 7. týden: Přehled vývoje pohlavních žláz a vývodních cest pohlavních včetně hlavních vývojových vad. 8. týden: Stavba a vývoj žláz s vnitřní sekrecí. Hypofýza a epifýza, gl. thyreoidea, gll. parathyreoideae, nadledvina. 9. týden: Přehled stavby a vývoje centrálního nervového systému (koncový mozek, mozeček, hřbetní mícha). 10. týden: Stavba smyslových orgánů I. Orgán zraku: Stavba oční koule. Dioptrická prostředí oka. Přehled vývoje oka. 11. týden: Stavba smyslových orgánů II. Orgán sluchu a rovnováhy. Přehled vývoje vnitřního ucha. 12. týden: Přehled stavby a vývoje kůže a kožních adnex. 15. týden: Přehled vývoje srdce a cév. Fetální krevní oběh. Přehled vývoje lebky.
