- Course objectives
- This course is an outline of Polish history, politics and culture since the Early Middle Ages to the present day. Historical and cultural specifics of the development of the Polish nation and territory and their influence on the forming of the modern Polish identity. At the end of this course, students should be able to understand the history of Polish lands, nation and culture since the half of the 10th century to the beginning of 3th millennium; to analyze some contemporary problems and phenomenons in Poland.

- 2. The Piast monarchy. Period of divisions. Arrival of the Teutonic Knights. Revival of the kingdom. The Czech dynasty. Cultural developments in the 11th –16th century. The states of the Jagiellonians.
- 3. The Commonwealth. Social and cultural developments.Stephen Báthory and the Vasas. The Cossacks. The 17th-century crisis. Political stagnation. Decline and attempts at reform. The Saxons. Reforms, agony, and partitions of Poland. Social and economic changes The Enlightenment
- 4. Partitioned Poland. The legions and the duchy of Warsaw. From the Congress of Vienna to 1848. Emigration as a permanent feature of Polish life for most of the 19th and 20th centuries. Emigration and revolt. The November and The January Insurrection. The January 1863 uprising and its aftermath
- 5. Poland in the beginning of 20th century. The rebirth of Poland. The Second Republic

- Credit requirements: attendance (min. 70%), seminar project, compulsory reading and final test in credit-week. Student need to score more than 65 % of points from the test to gain credit.
