As a result of a large-scale migration to the United Kingdom, this demographic shift has introduced a number of challenges for the educational system. One of them is to ensure equal opportunities for children from migrant families. Already in 2007, sociologist Steven Vertovec described British society as ‘super-diverse’. Since the number of residents born outside of the UK - along with their children - is still increasing, it is of high importance that the country’s social and educational system responds to this trend.

A study conducted through TALIS (OECD, 2018) (The Teaching and Learning International Survey under OECD) showed that immigrant children scored lower and also reported a lower sense of belonging to the school, which affects their psychological and social well-being.

The goal of this thesis is to find out how the British educational system adjusts to the needs of a super-diverse society, which strategies and policies should be implemented to ensure inclusive education, where pupils of all national and social backgrounds have the same opportunities.
The research question that I set for this Bachelor’s thesis is “How has the British educational system responded to the needs of its super-diverse society?

In the first part of my thesis, I will define a super-diverse society with all its features (multilingualism, multinationalism, etc), and I will also map the historical development of immigration to the United Kingdom since World War II to the present.
In the second part, I will focus on the Education Act and the arrangements made by the Department of Education to ensure equity and inclusion of immigrant children.
In the final part, I will conduct qualitative research by conducting interviews with a few teachers who are currently teaching in primary schools in the United Kingdom. I will ask them about their personal experience with teaching in diverse classes.

My goal is to use the information and recommendations from this thesis as the basis for my Master's Thesis, where I could later create a specific methodology for teaching in diverse classrooms.
