The diploma thesis deals with translation and analysis of selected parts of the book Watching the English written by social anthropologist Kate Fox. The book has been chosen mainly because it represents an interesting and challenging translating material. It discusses stereotypes and typical behaviour patterns of English people, and as such the text is dense with terms and references related to English cultural and historical environment. Although the text could be classified as popular scientific prose, its style is not unified and it includes stylistic and lexical features from other language varieties. Therefore the main attention will be devoted to the analysis of the stylistic and lexical level of the text, as well as to the translation of cultural terms. The main aim of the thesis is to create a text that would preserve the cultural and linguistic features and values of the source text while being comprehensible and beneficial for the target readership. As no official translation exists so far, we hope to suggest a set of ideas or guidelines, possibly applicable on the translation of the whole book.
