Course objectives
Seminars are devoted to the analyses of well-known Czech literary works in the second half of 19th century in comparasion with other Czech and foreign literary works, contemporary and from other periods. Students make use of their knowledge, especially in literary theory and cultural history. The aim of the course is to interpret well-known Czech literary works from the second part of 19th century in the context of general cultural questions.

  • Seminars are devoted mainly to the analyses of the following authors' works: Jan Neruda, Vítězslav Hálek, Karolina Světlá, Jakub Arbes, Jaroslav Vrchlický, Svatopuk Čech, Julius Zeyer, J. V. Sládek, Alois Jirásek, Zikmund Winter, Karel Václav Rais, Tereza Nováková.

Teaching methods
Seminars, 1½ hours per week; a reading of the disscus topic, a short oral presentation of reports, a written summary of the reports; a collective interpretation, class discussion.
Assessment methods
Lectures, reading. Active class participation and an essay. The exam will verify the knowledge of the development of the Czech literature in19th century and will show if students are able to interpret the most important texts.
