- Abstract
- The basic course on cross-border issues provides students with the key information about a specific territorial type, which is mainly viewed from a perspective of regional policy and spatial planning. It presents the theoretical and practical themes at different levels of order (European, national, Euro / regional to local). An integral part of the analysis of relevant conceptual documents as well as the reflection on border issues and cross-border cooperation between the population and regional development actors.
- Learning outcomes
- Course graduates are oriented in the current situation of the border regions of the Czechia, the Central European space and within the European Union.
- Key topics
- 1. Introduction to the subject, historical geographic view, periodization of borderland development. 2. Basic concepts: boundaries, boundary effects, border functions and their impact on socio-economic development. 3. The definition of border regions, approaches and examples of the general and in the Czech Republic, border regions in (regional) politics. 4. European Territorial Cooperation, Transnational, Cross-Border, Neighboring; examples of projects. 5. Typology of the Czech borderland and European border regions; development, state, category. 6. Addressing cross-border issues in European (EU) and neighboring countries. 7. Borderland and cross-border cooperation in regional policy and territorial planning of the Czech Republic. 8. Status, role, involvement and activities of the Association of European Border Regions 9. European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation – the future of cross-border cooperation in Europe. 10. Cross-border cooperation programs as part of EU and Czech regional policy. 11. Cross-border comparison and harmonization of spatially relevant information. 12. Reflection of Border Issues in Society: Research, Public Opinion, Initiatives.

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- The course consists of lectures introducing the theoretical and methodological basis from the point of view of geography and related disciplines. At the same time, it emphasizes the critical analysis of approaches to the frontier and cross-border cooperation in the context of regional development. According to the current situation, students are involved in the research activities of the workplace, or process their own project in accordance with the applicable methodology of the relevant operational program.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- The prerequisite for successful completion of the course is the proper preparation of the seminar work, usually for the selected Euroregion. The exam is written, it serves to verify the theoretical knowledge, as well as the involvement of frontier and cross-border cooperation in the activities of the decisional sphere.
