Course objectives
Main objectives of this elective course are as follows: to understand in detail the specific aspects of the animal cell biology - especially with respect to the mammalian cells; to understand the applications of the human cell biology in biomedicine (reproductive medicine, cell therapies), and to understand the principles of the most important methodical approaches in animal cell biology.
Syllabus
  • 1) INTRODUCTION TO THE ANIMAL CELL BIOLOGY: Organization of the living systems, cellular and non-cellular systems, basic characteristics of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, types of the eukaryotic cells, evolution of the cell.
  • 2) IN VITRO STUDIES OF THE ANIMAL CELLS: In vitro cultivation of the animal cells, tissue cultures and cell cultures, organ cultures, characterization of the diploid and transformed cell lines, practical applications.
  • 3) METHODICAL APPROACHES IN ANIMAL CELL BIOLOGY: Imaging methods, flow cytometry, metabolic assays, study of the living cells, micromanipulation techniques.
  • 4) BIOMEMBRANES: Basic characteristics, compartmentalization - structural and functional aspects, membrane fusion, protoplasts, chimera creation, practical application - hybridoma technology.
  • 5) CYTOSKELETON: Cytoskeletal components, asociated proteins, structural and functional aspects, intracellular transport, motor proteins, cell motility, muscle contraction, nuclear and membrane skeleton.
  • 6) CELL CYCLE AND CELL REPRODUCTION: Phases of the cell cycle, cell cycle checkpoints, regulation of the cell cycle, mitosis, cytokinesis, extracellular control of the cell proliferation.
  • 7) FERTILISATION AND EMBRYOGENESIS: Meiosis a gametogenesis, mechanisms of the fertilisation, embryogenesis, assisted reproduction, reproductive cloning.
  • 8) CELL DIFFERENTIATION: Totipotence, pluripotence, multipotence, stem and progenitor cells, differentiation pathways, growth factors, induced differentiation, failures in the cell differentiation and their consequences.
  • 9) STEM CELLS: Organization and renewal of the tissues, characteristics of the stem cells, adult and embryonic stem cells, cancer stem cells, stem cell lines in the in vitro conditions.
  • 10) CELL THERAPIES: In vitro cultivation of the artifical organ and tissue derivatives, cell therapies, immunotherapies, differentiation therapies, use of the adult and embryonic stem cells, therapeutic cloning.
