Basics of cell and molecular biology. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- there are 8 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to extend the basics of animal cell biology to the practical applications, especially in reproductive medicine, biological therapy for cancer, or regenerative medicine. Certain methodological approaches used in research as well as in practice will be discussed in detail.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the students should be able:
- to understand in detail the specific aspects of applied animal cell biology (including human cells);
- to explain the principles of main methodological approaches to the animal cells;
- to interpret the practical applications of this knowledge in selected areas of medicine. - Syllabus
- 1) STUDY OF ANIMAL CELLS UNDER IN VITRO CONDITIONS: development of cell cultivation in vitro, culture conditions for mammalian and human cells in vitro, types of cell cultures, biological features of normal and transformed cell lines, practical applications, archiving and cell culture collections;
- 2) IN VITRO METHODS FOR STUDYING OF CELL LIFE AND DEATH: types of cell death, apoptosis, methodological approaches for apoptosis studies, cytotoxicity vs. viability, medical aspects of apoptosis;
- 3) FERTILIZATION A EMBRYOGENESIS: meiosis and gametogenesis, mechanisms of fertilization, early embryogenesis, hybrids and chimeras;
- 4) ASSISTED REPRODUCTION OF ANIMALS AND CLONING: assisted reproduction of animals - overview of methods and practical applications, history and methods of animal cloning - parthenogenesis, splitting techniques, cloning using chimera production, SCNT method, cybrid production;
- 5) MEDICALLY ASSISTED REPRODUCTION: infertility and its causes, history of assisted reproduction in medicine, overview of established methods, in vitro fertilization, human cloning, production of artificial gametes;
- 6) CELL DIFFERENTIATION: differentiation potential of animal cells, differentiation pathways, growth factors, induced differentiation;
- 7) EMBRYONIC AND ADULT STEM CELLS: biological features of stem cells, adult stem cells, embryonic stem cells, stem cell lines under in vitro conditions, induced pluripotent stem cells;
- 8) CANCER STEM CELLS: hypotheses of cancer stem cell origin, biological features, markers of cancer stem cells and functional assays on the phenotype, possibilities of targeted anticancer therapy;
- 9) CELL THERAPIES: biological treatment of cancer, gene therapies, cell therapies, the usage of adult and embryonic stem cells;
