Bc. Marek Bednář
Anotace
Abstract
The aim of the thesis is to discuss in-depth the issue of translation universals and their research in translation studies, address some of the underlying problems with the term ‘universal’ as well as the extent to which these phenomena are specific to translation only and propose a new goal towards which empirical studies of translation should strive.
Zadání práce
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the background and true origin of translation universals, particularly in relation to the existence of almost identical features in virtually all branches of human communication, far beyond the scope of translation studies as we view it today. The issue of translation universals, the relevance of the research performed in this field today, and possible implications that the existence of these universal features outside of the field of translation might have on the empirical study of TUs shall be discussed in detail, while also drawing on other fields such as linguistics, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics to investigate why these features are not being studied in these fields instead. The thesis takes on a more personal tone as it reveals the motivations, the thought process and the theoretical research of the present author pertaining to the topic at hand, and the numerous issues that stand in the way of further research into the origin of translation universals and the fundamental processes of human communication.
