English Language in the Swedish School System

Anotace

In Sweden, students have a right to their mother tongue education. Pupils, who have a different mother tongue than Swedish, have the opportunity to study their mother tongue as a subject at school. Since the mother tongue is considered as an important thing for the children’s identity, personality and thought development, a well-developed mother tongue provides good basis for learning Swedish language, as well as other languages and subjects.

Abstract

The proposed thesis aspires at exploring the typical features of English as spoken by Swedish youngsters and identifying the phenomena shaping it, including the similarities and differences between the two languages as well as the presence of English in the country's school system and culture.
