Course objectives
To provide students an overview of the use of medicinal plants in the field of medicine and self-treatment with respect to the principles of evidence-based medicine. To enable students be oriented in the field of medicinal plants in full scope of pharmacognosy, corresponding ATC groups where medicinal plants are usable.
Learning outcomes
Students after completing the course - understand and know the basic classes of active costituents of medicinal plants, and are also familiar with the issues of the legislative topics (drug versus dietary supplement vs. pharmacopoeial herbal drug) - know the basics of plant use in the prevention and treatment of diseases based on EBM (evidence-based medicine) - are able to provide expert advice to the patient about his direct inquiry into the use of medicinal plants in self-treatment - can search and classify professional pharmacological information about medicinal plants and make conclusions applicable in practice - recognize dangerous interactions of medicinal herbs with conventional drugs

  • 1. LECTURE: Terminology and classification of natural drugs. Production, processing and storage of medicinal plants. Plant poisons. Possible side effects of plants. Safety of use of plant products.

Teaching methods
During the studying the students can acquire the knowledge of the therapeutical use of medicinal plants at the online lectures with the possibility to discuss the particular topics with the teacher.
Assessment methods
Final exam- written form (ROPOT) The students have to prove the active knowledge of pharmacology of medicinal plants. They have to pass the final multiple-choice test to get the credit.They are asked to answer to multiple-choice questions (1 or more correct answers are possible to each question). The test contains 25 questions. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. No point will be distracted for an incorrect answer to the multiple-choice question. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated. A criterion for receiving the credit is the summary score higher or equal to the 50% points of the maximum score obtained, i.e. a minimum of 13 completely correctly answered questions required.
