- Course objectives
- This course introduces students to theoretical perspectives on adult education and learning. Through discussions, individual and group work, and assigned readings, students will engage with key ideas and influential thinkers who have shaped the understanding of adult learners over the past 150 years. The course establishes a conceptual, methodological, and theoretical foundation that will support further studies in the field of andragogy.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: explain the key theories on which andragogy is based, identify and utilize relevant andragogical resources, apply the principles of academic work with sources, reflect on and develop andragogical ideas within professional discussions.
- Syllabus
- 1) What is andragogy? Andragogical disciplines, subject matter, and terminology 2) How to study andragogy? Key resources and how to work with them 3) How and why do adults learn? – the adult as a key category of andragogy 4) Lifelong learning and adult education: formal and non-formal education, informal learning 5) Historical development of interest in adult education: social impulses and the first educators 6) Foundations of andragogical thinking: behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism 7) How can an adult change? (answers by Paulo Freire and Jack Mezirow) 8) How can we fulfill our human potential? (answers by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow) 9) What is learning? (answer by Knud Illeris) 10) How do we learn from experience? (answers by David Kolb and Peter Jarvis) 11) What should adult education look like? (answer by Robert Gagné) 12) How do adults organize their own learning? – self-directed and self-regulated learning 13) Under what conditions do adults learn best? (answers by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger) 14) What have we learned? Reflection on the semester through an overview of learning theories
