Parts of the final state examination and its content

The state final examination for master's students consists of a thesis defence and a professional debate. Both of these parts take place exclusively orally and in attendance.

The academic debate
The thesis debate consists of two sub-examinations. Both of these examinations test students' knowledge of the following areas: 'Social and natural science aspects of environmental issues' and 'Social science and humanities aspects of
Social and Human Sciences of Natural Science Topics'. Students will be given a total of four questions ('topics') representing the two areas being examined, so there will be two questions for each of the two areas.
The themes always link knowledge from different courses. They are deliberately formulated to be quite broad, so that learners and the committee have the opportunity to develop ideas and sub-themes that emerge during the examination. The literature listed for each topic is intended to provide students with support in preparing for the state final examination. The entire examination lasts 45 minutes.
Evaluation of the academic debate
The committee evaluates each topic separately. Overall, therefore, the student receives two grades (A-F) in the final state examination. The committee's assessment is based on the student's knowledge of the topic as well as their ability to integrate knowledge, critically analyse it, point out the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, theories and concepts and formulate relevant arguments based on them. The above definition of the topics does not presuppose a comprehensive coverage of the content, but should rather serve as a guide to the perspectives that may emerge in the discussion. Assessment is both content-based (assessment of knowledge acquired) and competence-based (assessment of skills or competences acquired).
At the end of the debate, the committee informs the students whether they have succeeded or failed.
The topic areas are always published at least two months before the final examination date.

Thesis viva
The defence of the thesis is a committee and public. The thesis is assessed by the opponent and the supervisor of the thesis. The whole defence lasts about 45 minutes, during which the graduates present their thesis and the opinions of the supervisors and opponents are read out, to which the students have to respond. This is followed by a discussion of the thesis with the committee and possibly the public. The committee decides whether the thesis has met the requirements and its classification at the defence. For the committee, the text of the thesis and the course of the defence are the decisive documents; less emphasis is placed on the opinions of the supervisor and the opponent.
