- Course objectives
- Course is complementary to VSLC0421p and VSLC0421s. The aim of the course it to bring experience with solving practical problems in clinical biochemistry, to acquire practical laboratory skills and to learn students to use results of biochemical analysis for diagnostics
- Syllabus
- Handling biological material. Drawing blood specimens. 1.2 Blood serum. Anticoagulants, blood plasma. 1.3 Biochemical analyzers. 1.4 Interpretation of test results. 1.5 Reporting of test results Laboratory investigations of lipid and cholesterol metabolism 2.1 The enzymatic assay of total serum cholesterol. 2.2 Determination of serum triacylglycerols. 2.3 HDL-cholesterol determination, calculation of the LDL-cholesterol. 2.4 The chylomicron test. 2.5 Electrophoresis of lipoproteins. Investigations of saccharide metabolism. Diabetes mellitus 3.1 The enzymatic assay of glucose in blood. 3.2 Estimation of blood glucose using a personal glucometer. 3.3 The oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT). 3.4 Detection and determination of glucose in urine. 3.5 Detection of ketone bodies in urine. 3.6 Determination of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1) in blood. 3.7 The long-term complications of diabetes – microalbuminuria. Selected investigations in liver diseases 4.1 Determination of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity. 4.2 Determination of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity. 5.2 Detection of bilirubin in urine. 5.3 Detection of urobilinogens in urine. Laboratory diagnostics of myocardial infarction 6.1 Measurement of total plasma creatine kinase activity. 6.2 Measurement of plasma CK-MB activity. 6.3 Measurement of plasma troponin T concentration. 6.4 Measurement of plasma myoglobin concentration. Investigations of plasma proteins 7.1 Determination of total serum proteins by the biuret method. 7.2 Determination of blood serum albumin. 7.3 Electrophoresis of serum proteins. 7.4 Assay for increased level of C-reactive protein. 7.5 Determination of IgE in blood serum (ELISA). 7.6 Determination of ferritin in blood serum (ELISA). Compensatory practicals. Credits.

Full attendance in all lessons (making up all missing and justified lessons), completion of all lab reports and handing them to the teacher till the given data. Obtaining of course-unit credits of practices is the pre-requisite for registration to the examination of Biochemistry I. - Language of instruction
