- Dentistry (programme LF, M-DENT)
- Dentistry (eng.) (programme LF, M-ZL)
- Course objectives
- Seminars are complementary to the Biochemistry lecture. The knowledge of intermediary metabolism, characteristic features of metabolism of individual organs and tissues and metabolism at various conditions of the organism (well-fed state, fasting, starvation, metabolic stress, obesity, metabolic syndrome)are thoroughly practised during Biochemistry seminars.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to:
- explain the interrelationship between the metabolism of nutrients under different states of the organism.
- describe the metabolic characteristics of major organs and tissues and major disorders, discusses their association with diseases.
- understand and discuss principles of maintaining homeostasis and acid-base balance in the organism, including modeling situations
- discuss the composition of body fluids and their disorders in connection with the principles of homeostasis.
- explain the principles of metabolism regulation at all levels. - Syllabus
- Factors influencing laboratory tests, interpretation of results. Diagnostic accuracy.
- Enzymes in diagnostics.
- Blood glucose homeostasis, metabolic disorders in diabetes mellitus.
- Protein quality. Protein and amino acid transformations in different states.

- Nutrient transformations in different states. Energy balance, obesity, metabolic syndrome.
- Role of the liver in metabolism of nutrients, hormones and vitamins. Catabolism of heme.
- Metabolism of iron and copper.
- Biotransformation of xenobiotics. Alcohol metabolism.
- Water homeostasis, Na+ and K+. Regulation of osmolality and volemia. Disorders of water homeostasis.
