- Abstract
- This practical course complements the lecture-based course Biochemistry II. Its objective is to provide students with hands-on experience in solving practical problems in clinical biochemistry, to develop essential laboratory skills, and to learn how to interpret the results of clinical biochemical analyses. Students become familiar with major biochemical-analytical methods, physiological ranges of key biochemical parameters, and their diagnostic significance in various pathological conditions.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the methods of obtaining biological material for biochemical analyses and understand the principles of correct handling;
- describe the physiological reference values of essential biochemical parameters;
- interpret the results of biochemical analyses and discuss their clinical significance;
- understand the principles of important biochemical‑analytical methodologies;
- perform and navigate basic laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
- Key topics
- Introduction to practical classes: laboratory safety, rules of conduct, pipetting principles.
- Selected tests of glucose metabolism: plasma/blood/urine glucose, glycaemic profile, OGTT, urinary ketone bodies.
- Selected tests of lipid and cholesterol metabolism: serum/blood cholesterol, serum triglycerides, LDL/HDL/non‑HDL cholesterol.
- Selected liver function tests: serum ALT/AST, serum/urine bilirubin, urinary urobilinogen.
- Selected serum protein tests: total protein, albumin, electrophoresis, CRP, ferritin.
- Selected renal function tests: serum/urine creatinine, creatinine clearance, eGFR, fractional reabsorption and excretion of water, urinary proteins and albumin, serum/urine urea, nitrogen balance.
- Chemical qualitative urine analysis: diagnostic dipsticks.
- Selected examinations relevant to urolithiasis: serum/urine uric acid, urinary calculi.

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- Laboratory-based instruction focused on the practical performance of selected biochemical analyses and discussion of the diagnostic significance of individual tests.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Course-unit credit. Conditions for giving the course-unit credit:
1) completion of all classes, 2) elaboration and approval of all protocols. - Language of instruction
