Course objectives
Lectures concentrates on the general historical, political and cultural situation in the areas, focusing on the current situation with references to the roots in history and causes of current conditions. Aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of the Slavonic areas (Central, Eastern and Southern Europe) as a whole, so students will be able to compare its parts and apply this information on individual problems from the area of culture, politics, language and literature.
Learning outcomes
Absolvent of this course will be well informed about the so-called area of Pax Slavia, that also includes Czechia, will be able to comparatively describe and decide its parts and will realize similarities and differences between Slavic nations and countries.

  • 1. Geographic and political characteristics of Eastern Slavonic countries.
  • 2. General overview on history of Eastern Slavs.
  • 3. Overview of culture and literature of Eastern Slavs.
  • 4. Characteristics of Eastern Slavonic languages.
  • 5. Geographic and political characteristics of Western Slavonic countries.
  • 6. Central Europe - history and culture.
  • 7. Characteristics of Western Slavonic languages in context of Central Europe.
  • 8. Overview of culture and literature of Western Slavs in context of Central Europe.
  • 9. Geographic and political characteristics of Southern Slavonic countries.
  • 10. Ethnic and religious structure of Eastern Slavonic countries and nations.
  • 11. Most important historical milestones of Southern Slavonic countries, mainly Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
  • 12. Language situation in Southern Slavonic area, most important authors of Southern Slavonic literatures in 19th, 20th and 21st century.
