Course objectives
This lecture is conceived as an introduction into molecular biology methods and it is focused on basic techniques commonly used for study of proteins, nucleic acids and their interactions in living cells and in vitro. It is recommended to all biology students who are not specialized in molecular biology. Understanding of principle and practical use of molecular biology methods is emphasized.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand principles of the methods and make reasoned decisions about choosing the right methodological approaches to address specific biological phenomena.
Syllabus
  • 1. Structure of nucleic acids - seminar (primary, secondary and tertiary structure of DNA and RNA, different conformations of DNA and their significance in biological systems).
  • 2. Nucleic acids: manipulation, centrifugation, modifications in vitro.
  • 3. Electrophoretic analyses of nucleic acids.
  • 4. Hybridisation of nucleic acids: probe preparation, labelling.
  • 5. Restriction analysis of nucleic acids, restriction map construction, genome mapping.
