Approach to the unresponsive patient
Airway management
- the unresponsive patient’s muscle tone is decreased, that means that he/she is threatened by the airway obstruction
Before the assessment of the breathing, the airway has to be opened by tilting the patient's head back.
- the procedure helps to pull the soft tissues of the neck and thus enables us to open the airway
How to open the airway?
- turn the patient face up
- open the airway using the head tilt and chin lift technique:
- place your hand on the patient's forehead and push down
- place the fingertips of your other hand under the bony part of the chin and pull it up
