Approach to the unresponsive patient

Communication of the rescuer

In this chapter we summarize a few tips about the communication with the patient and other people on the place of the incident.

  • firstly, always introduce yourself and ask for the names of the other people on the plaxe of the incident
  • if the situation is chaotic and there are more people willing to help the patient, but they are e.g. laymen, do not be afraid to lead the others and organise them
  • be calm
  • explain the patient, when he/she is responsive, or his/her close relatives or friends all your steps
  • if you ask someone for help, try to be concrete and direct – instead of saying: “Please, can someone call the EMS?” better use: “Please, you in the blue T-shirt, what is your name? … Could you please call the EMS and tell them, what has happened?”
  • give simple and clear instructions (always give the others only one task, not more at a time)
  • check whether the task was completed (e.g. did he/she call the EMS?)
  • give the people, who are upset and complicate you providing the first aid, a simple task (e.g. to find the documents of the patient, to wait for the EMS in front of the building, etc.)
  • do not send people (the relatives or friends) away from the patient if they wish to stay (especially the parents from their child)
  • never promise that you will save the patient, instead try to assure the others that you do your best to help the patient and the help is on the way
